What About the Drinking Water: An Ekphrastic Response to Westry’s Conservationist Film
This Ekphrastic workshop was part of Aliah and Keagan’s Lamplight AVL June 2024 Residency
This Ekphrastic event began with Dogwood Fellow and Southern Filmmaker Tiffany Westry’s 20 minute film, What About the Water, which explores the role of riparian forests in purifying and protecting our water supply and the community protectors of this water. Westry’s film is especially powerful because the story nightlights the power and success of community action.
Participants were encouraged to write down phrases that strike them as they watched the film.
These overheard excerpts later became part of their writing during the guided exercise. Because of this, and the accessible structure of the prompt, this workshop had very strong participation. Almost all attendees write something they wanted to share These poems were a really lovely gift to Aliah Lavonne Jahan-Tigh and Keagan Wheat and to the filmmaker, Tiffany Westry.
